Rafter is a closely spaced inclined beam, which is used to
support the roof sheathing. Rafter spacing is usually provided
at 24". Rafters are designed for bending, shear, deflection
and bearing. Type of rafter to be used depends upon the rafter
span.
Based on the structural system provided rafters can be classified
into following types:
Consulting Engineers, Corp. uses allowable stress design
method to develop framing rafter design solutions. This method
is based on the principle that actual stress in the material
should not exceed the permissible stress permitted in the
material. The rafter is designed for working load condition.
Special attention is given to the following factors for framing
rafter design:
1. Bending (including lateral stability)
2. Shear
3. Deflection
4. Bearing
